This book is a mixture of fictional and real elements. A centrally important question in the book is whether religious faith can ever be reconciled with science. The main character, Doug Lowry a doctor scientist at the Mayo Clinic who has new ideas about the nature of God, argues that such reconciliation is possible, provided the faithful and organized religions start thinking about God differently. He introduces the new concept of the dual nature of God having both spiritual and material sides, the latter having the ability to interact with humans via material means.

It is also the material side of God who planned and executed the creation of the Universe. Doug suggests that creation of the Universe required the existence of an entirely new entity, “information”, the precursor of all energy and matter forms which material God used to create the energy field which was, when triggered, expanded very rapidly finally resulting in the Big Bang as described by the astrophysicists. In Doug’s view the hypothetical existence of “information”, which has the dual, essentially quantum, nature of being both nothing and something would solve how possibly the Universe could evolve from “nothing”. In Doug’s view, once the Universe was created, God let the evolution to take its course which then it has never interfered with.

On another level, the book also provides examples of how lives can be devastated or redeemed when the unknown and unknowable emotions residing in all of us come to surface. Are those unknowable emotions still part of our consciousness? What triggers them? Is consciousness something nonmaterial and will survive us, or it is solely material strictly depending on our brain’s activity? Doug, like all of us, struggles with these questions, but they remain a mystery for him just like for anybody else.
